The Charlatan Savagnin

As an innovator in the Coonawarra and Wrattonbully regions, Hollick has experimented with a number of varietals and styles of wines that â??push the boundariesâ?? of winemaking.

In the last decade Hollick has launched the following wines to the market:

  • Savagnin
  • Rosé
  • Tempranillo
  • Sangiovese Cabernet
  • Barbera

After a visit to Spain, Ian and Wendy Hollick decided to trial the Spanish variety Albarino on the Wilgha Vineyard in Coonawarra. Planting took place in late 2006, and in 2009 the Hollicks, like many of the Australian wine industry, discovered that the Albarino sourced by the CSIRO from Spain, was in fact Savagnin (SAV-AN-YIN), a distinguished French variety.

Savagnin is not to be confused with Sauvignon Blanc, it gives vibrant apple and pear characters, is perfect with a range of foods, and exemplifies the Hollick teamâ??s innovative approach to trialling new varieties.
